The Final Act: Austin's Bond Election Proposal Heads to Council
On Monday, May 4, the Bond Election Advisory Task Force (BEATF) wrapped up its final meeting — nearly 18 months of work identifying Austin's most pressing capital improvement needs. Zilker Park is for the Birds!
Last night, 2,872,700 birds quietly passed through Travis County as you slept—most of them traveling from Central or South America to summer in the North. May is peak spring migration in Central Texas, and Zilker Park is one of the best places in the city to witness it.
The bulk of migration happens at night, typically beginning 30 to 45 minutes after sunset, with the greatest numbers in flight two to three hours later. What you see in the park during the day is often the overnight crowd, resting and foraging before the next leg of their journey.

They're quietly doing some of the most important ecological work in our region — and they need our help to keep doing it.

It’s where I learned to love nature, and the unimaginable possibilities it opens up. My brothers and I spent hours back there, and it left me equating home, and belonging, with the woods.

To celebrate the many voices that make Zilker Park so special, Zilker 351 is launching a Guest Blogger Series. We begin with Holly Hawk, Executive Director of the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy, whose story reflects the deep connection so many of us feel for Austin’s most beloved park.
