Tree Planting with Zilker 351 and TreeFolks

Join Zilker 351 and TreeFolks to plant 150 trees in Zilker Park

March 7 and 13, 2026:

9 am - 1 pm both days

This March, Zilker 351 is partnering with TreeFolks to plant 150 native trees—50 canopy trees and 100 understory—in Zilker Park. March is the sweet spot for tree planting in Central Texas: cooler temperatures and spring rains give young trees time to establish strong roots before the summer heat arrives. Planting now sets these trees up for long, healthy lives—and maximizes the benefits they’ll deliver to the park for decades to come.

These new trees will be planted within the Barton Springs Segment of the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, where they play an outsized role in protecting Barton Springs. Tree roots help slow and filter stormwater, reduce erosion, and lessen flooding by allowing more water to soak into the aquifer rather than rushing into nearby creeks. Lining both sides of the trail just south of the Barton Springs entrance, the trees will increase shade, lower surface temperatures, and make the walk more comfortable and beautiful for park users. They will also create new habitat for birds and other wildlife in an area that overlaps with critical habitat for Zilker’s two endangered salamander species.

At this event we will learn how to plant for long-term success, blending hands-on learning with shared stewardship of the park. It’s a small footprint with a big impact, and we can’t wait to get started.
