Ecology
Zilker sits on top of the aquifer that feeds Barton Springs. Every tree we keep standing and every acre that isn't bare dirt is protecting water quality and species that live nowhere else on earth, including two federally endangered salamanders. That kind of care doesn't happen on its own. It takes funding, every year, indefinitely.
Access
A park is only shared space if everyone can actually get to it and afford to be there. Keeping Zilker free, safe, and welcoming for every neighborhood in Austin, not just the ones closest to it, takes ongoing investment in programming and a seat at the table when decisions about the park's future get made.
History
Zilker has centuries of history under its trails: Indigenous land, civil rights history, decades of Austin life. None of it survives by accident. Someone has to research it, tell it, and keep it in front of people, or it quietly disappears.
Education
Kids don't learn to care about a place they've never been taught to notice. Programs that get families outside, asking questions about the water or the wildlife, build the next generation of people who'll fight to keep Zilker wild.
